Amenorrhea - absence of periods, generally due to low weight.
Anaemia - blood or haemoglobin deficiency.
Anorexia Nervosa - eating disorder characterised by restricting calorific intake to the point of self-starvation.
Bigorexia - otherwise known as muscle dysmorphia where muscular men pursue ultimate muscle through constant muscle building exercises.
Body Image - view that a person holds in relation to their own body.
Bulimia Nervosa - eating disorder characterised by repeated episodes of bingeing followed by purging or other compensatory actions.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - type of psychotherapy which focuses on problem solving.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) - a combination of both cognitive and behavioural therapies plus a series of 'third wave' techniques, i.e. mindfulness.
Dietician - specialist practitioner in nutrition.
Force feeding - feeding someone against their expressed wishes, particularly when there is active resistance.
Lanugo - fine downy hair which grows as a consequence of significant weight loss in an attempt to conserve body heat.
Mindfulness - a learned technique to aid being 'in touch' with the present moment.
Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) - treatment designed to increase motivation to recover.
